The story of Boldt Castle is a romantic, but tragically sad one. In 1900, George Boldt, proprietor of the Waldorf Astoria, came to Heart Island in the St. Lawrence River and began building a castle for his true love--his wife, Louise. In 1904, however, Louise died suddenly (possibly from a heart condition). Heartbroken, Boldt ordered all work on the castle to stop. For decades the castle stood unfinished and abandoned. In 1977, the castle was bought by the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority. Much of the castle has been restored and finished, but some of it will always remained unfinished in memory of Boldt's beloved, lost wife.
